The problem is that the attacks take too long to execute, watering down the action into a chess game where you must block then decide which attack to use over and over again--who would have thought jedi warfare would be so boring? This wouldn't be completely bad if LucasArts polished things up. Right now, the 3D graphics are incredibly glitchy, to the point that their flakiness causes you to die because of disappearing scenery.
Checkpoints are few and far between, making these problems worse since you must retrace large parts of the levels. Nothing seems to be hashed out well-even the potentially cool two-player cooperative mode is ill-conceived. The only great part about the game is its superb music and sound effects, but you might as just buy the movie soundtrack CD instead since that's just about all this game has to offer.
The developers implemented a control system that seemingly adds depth, while you also get a decent amount of combos and Force tricks for your five characters. Trouble is, the control scheme only works well a third of the time.
Locking onto enemies and focusing attacks is fine when only one or two baddies appear on screen. But when surrounded, you must rely on hit-and-run tactics, which become a chore with the loose control platform jumping's no picnic, either.
You can unlock some nifty fighters and mini-games, but they're not worth the frustration. It would've been one thing if the game was either strictly a platformer or a side-scrolling beat-'em-up. But the developers tried to do both, creating a frustrating mix, suffering from shoddy-looking graphics and loose control. Forget about being able to pull off quick jumps or blocks. Seems as if the levels were designed with more attention to accuracy within the Star Wars universe than making them fun.
There are awe-inspiring moments--like the way battle droids sometimes mistakenly kill their own kind with their blasters, or being able to deflect shots with your lightsaber. Naboo is located far from the capital of Coruscant, and thus, the happenings can not be witnessed directly by the Republic. While it is known that the Trade Federation has formed a blockade, it is unknown to the Republic that they are preparing a full-scale invasion of the planet.
Perhaps you have, but with Star Wars: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles, players do not need to worry about solving puzzles but will occasionally have to escort characters. Whereas Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace is an adventure game that follows the movie's storyline, Jedi Power Battles sacrifices elements of the movie in order to provide a beat-'em-up action experience.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is the youngest of the group. He is fast and agile but still has much to learn before becoming a Jedi Knight. Mace Windu is also an expert with a lightsaber but is perhaps best known for his diplomatic skills as a senior member of the Jedi Council.
Adi Gallia -- the only playable female character -- is a Corellian with quick reflexes. Hailing from the planet of Dorin, Plo Koon has incredible strength but is the slowest of the group. Alone or side-by-side with a friend, players must fight their way through 10 levels. The first level takes place on the Trade Federation Battleship where you must escape with your life.
Escape from the battleship and the second level opens in the swamps of Naboo. Level Three takes place in the city of Theed, home to Queen Amidala. In Level Four, players will enter the Theed Palace where they must free the queen who is being held hostage. Jedi Power Battles' fifth level moves the game off of Naboo and onto the planet of Tatooine.
Level Seven takes players back to Naboo for a romp through some ruins. The palace cliffs are the setting for Level Nine where you will need to rescue six Naboo pilots.
Finally, the tenth level takes place in the palace's generator core. Players will need to use their lightsabers to slash through the hordes of enemies as well as to deflect incoming laser blasts. Have patience Jedi, use The Force and return peace to the planet of Naboo. Take back the Theed palace in fast and furious lightsaber assaults. You will have the power of the Force and your trusty Jedi saber as you ward off legions of battle droids, destroyer droids, assassins and other creatures from the Star Wars: Episode I worlds.
Battle side-by-side with a companion in two-player sessions. Gain power boosts, new moves and enhanced abilities as you progress through the levels. Threats escalate on each level of the game-specialized droids with new weapons, native beasts and more. Features: Third person perspective.
